About us : About Bombay Leprosy Project Bombay Leprosy Project (BLP) is a Registered Non-profit Voluntary Organisation working with leprosy patients for `Improving the Quality of their Lives’ in G & H Municipal Wards including Dharavi – Asia’s largest slum in Mumbai area. This concept of `Innovation in Leprosy’ was conceived by a group of leprosy experts in Mumbai on 11 Sept, 1976. BLP has since set new benchmark-, in chemotherapy, disability care, rehabilitation and medical education. Its learnings are featured in prestigious local, national and international publications.
Vision : Our future goals: · To monitor all treated cases to identify late clinical problems such as relapse, reaction or nerve function impairment which are know to occurs even years after stopping medical treatment. · To extend comprehensive disability care for the patients having established disability and as well as to prevent the development of new disabilities not only in Bombay slums but also in adjoining rural areas. · To practise CBR for the leprosy disabled as well as the physically handicapped in an integrated manner in large population groups. To extend the services of the ‘Wall Journal” to many more medical colleges in order to impart continuing medical education in leprosy. · To provide treatment through DOTS to sputum positive TB cases and maintains a good follow-up to identify treatment failure or relapse. · To implement a sound field based programme for the control of HIV/AIDS in the target population in the slums of Mumbai. · To offer community based vocational training to the leprosy disabled and general disabled in trades that are job oriented.

Brief History : Bombay Leprosy Project (BLP) is a registered non-profit voluntary Organisation working in Bombay since 1976 towards the goal of ‘World Without Leprosy. BLP is recognized as an outstanding research organization both nationally and internationally, having pioneered several cost-effective simple field-based strategies for the management of leprosy, and as a trend-setter in practicing integration with the allied health services and therapy has set a model for Urban Leprosy Control work. The project, through depending entirely on public donations for its existence, possesses extraordinary inner strength and vision and functions with great zeal and enthusiasm towards achieving its goal. Besides offering quality services through an operationally feasible method, BLP has encouraged active participation of the community for the welfare of the leprosy-affected persons. BLP excels under the leadership of Padmashree Dr. R. Ganapati, an eminent Leprologist and Consultant to WHO/ Government of India. A highly academic team comprising of Dr. CR Revankar, Dr. W Pai and Mr. S. Kingsley assists him in working towards this utopian goal.
Brief Projects / Achievements : Undaunted by various odds, BLP forges ahead in its n1tSSlOn goals. It reaches 1.95 million people, of which 60% are from slums like Dharavi. So far, 25,000 patients have been cured and disabilities prevented in 2000 patients. Also, 300 leprosy patients & general handicapped persons have been rehabilitated. With your help, we aspire to help many more deserving cases. Recently, BLP has plunged into providing assistance in RNTCP (Revised National Tuberculosis Control Programme) in one health-post in Dharavi, with the objective of identifying relapse cases of Tuberculosis and a DOTS (Directly Observed Treatment – ShortCourse) Clinic in H ward.
What do you exactly do for a beneficiary?: The scope of BLP’s capabilities and resources lies in its strength, vitality and vision to work towards ‘World Without Leprosy”. The success of this, however, depends on the encouragement from the more affluent sections of society.
