December 18, 2006
About 1,000 motorists have been booked for violation of noise pollution norms around the courts in the city over the last six months, the traffic police has informed the Bombay high court. Satisfied with the measures taken by the police, a division bench of Chief Justice Harjit Singh Bedi and justice V M Kanade has thus disposed of a petition filed by an advocate complaining of noise pollution in areas that house courts.
As per the noise pollution rules, areas around courts, schools and religious places are silence zones. The advocate, Uday Shah, in his petition alleged that the police were unable to check the honking of vehicles and noise near the Small Causes Court.
Advocate Niranjan Pandit, counsel for the traffic police, informed the court that around 371 motorists were booked for noise pollution near the HC and the police had set a speed limit of 25 km per hour on K B Patil Marg abutting the court.
The police said electronic banners were also put up at 11 major junctions asking motorists to avoid honking in silence zones, especially outside the courts.
With regard to the noise pollution near the Small Causes Court, the police said it was due to the work of the Metro subway, which would be completed only in June 2007.
