Mumbai: Mumbai’s water woes have made everyone sit up, take notice and think of ways to conserve water. It’s a crisis that has united all communities in the city. The latest community to join the save water brigade are the plumbers. An army of trained ‘plumbers’ has now decided to assist the Mumbaikars tide over the reeling water crisis.
“Green plumbers will be accredited specialists who will focus on increasing consumer awareness on saving the earth by using water and energy efficient plumbing fixtures and systems,” said Subash Deshpande, director, International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials (IAPMO). “When you save water, you save energy for conveyance, pumping to overhead tanks and treating sewage. You also save energy using solar hot water heaters and prevent green house gas emissions.”
Even the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) seems to be interested in the green plumbing concept. Deputy municipal commissioner D Gondalia said: “We have asked IAPMO to submit details on green plumbing to check into the feasibility of working with the BMC.”
The green plumbers, who will be trained by IAMPO and the Indian Plumbing Association (IPA), will go to individual housing societies and will also focus on importance of metering and excess consumption of water. “The green plumbing method can help bring down flush water consumption from 6 litres to 4 litres. The shower water consumption can be reduced to 7.8 litres per minute from 10 litres per minute,” Deshpande said.
