The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) which has poured in Rs 1.5 crore for a massive beach clean-up operation along the shores of the city, is facing a major hindrance — resident Kolis defecating on the seashore. Said a BMC official from the solid waste management department, on condition of anonymity, “Even after setting up public toilets in each of the areas, they choose to defecate on the seashore. It’s out of habit.”
To curb the problem, the BMC has set up mobile toilets in each of the Koliwadas. BP Patil, Chief Engineer, Solid Waste Management, said, “We have increased the strength of the workers assigned to clean the Mumbai shoreline. The beaches were cleaned regularly but the shorelines were untouched, and the garbage accumulated on the seashore. We hope people living in the Koliwadas use the mobile toilets we are providing.”
The BMC collects 20 to 25 metric tonnes of garbage daily from the Mumbai’s shoreline, and nearly 50 metric tonnes from the beaches. The corporation has added between 20 and 30 workers to the operation.
BMC corporator Arvind Bane, who began the cleanliness campaign for the 3 km shoreline from Cuffe Parade to Haji Ali, said, “The much-needed spruce up is finally in progress. The shoreline in the Koli villages also needs to be cleaned, but that can succeed only if the residents co-operate with the BMC, and stop defecating on along the shore.”
