Civic body, NGO to clean south Mumbai shoreline
Residents of south Mumbai’s will finally get some respite from the filth that has been accumulating on the shoreline. In a joint initiative, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and an NGO, I Love Mumbai, will undertake a two-year clean-up operation in south Mumbai. The civic body has sanctioned Rs 52 lakh for the purpose.
The drive was kick-started on Monday by Shaina NC from I Love Mumbai and the United States Consul General Paul Folmsbee.
The area to be cleaned is the 3-km shoreline stretch between Cuffe Parade and Haji Ali.
BJP corporator Arvind Bane, who initiated the campaign, said: “We identified about 20 points on the stretch which needed urgent attention. But, no authority was coming forward to clean the garbage.”
Bane said the BMC and the collector were busy passing the buck when it came to cleaning and maintaining the shoreline. “As a result, the locals had to suffer,” said Shaina NC.
The areas that will benefit from the drive will be Haji Ali, areas in Breach Candy, and Geeta Nagar in Cuffe Parade. The civic body has appointed contractors for this two year-operation.
Majority of the garbage, a civic official said, was accumulated during high tides. Hence, the operation will be carried out depending on the tidal schedule. The workers would clean up these areas immediately after the tide subsides.
