BMC to send plastic waste to ACC Cements for recycling
BERHAMPUR: The Berhampur Municipal Corporation has decided to take measures so that the large amount of polythene waste generated in the city could be segregated and recycled.
The authorities are also thinking of sending the segregated polythene waste from the city to some cement factory for its proper recycling. Large amount of polythene waste has become a major headache for the municipal authorities of the city. To check this menace the Berhampur Municipal Corporation has already banned sale of drinking water pouches to upkeep the sanitation of the city which did not have a proper sewerage system.
The large quantity of polythene waste from the lakhs of used polythene drinking water pouches was clogging the sewerage system of the city.
Despite this ban order the rise in polythene waste from different means is on the rise. As the polythene is no biodegradable, till now dumps of polythene waste is being burnt up in open air. It causes much air pollution, which was again a problem for the municipality. So, the municipal corporation has decided to spend money from its exchequer if needed for proper recycling or disposal of the polythene waste of the city, said the Mayor of the city Siba Shankar Dash.
According to him the municipal corporation is planning to have special waste-bins in all areas to collect polythene waste through the cooperation of locals.
The polythene waste segregated from the solid waste collected from different parts of the city would also be added to this collection. The polythene waste may then be sent to some cement factory in the State for its proper reuse.
The municipal corporation is thinking to hold talks with the authorities of the ACC cements in Bargarh about it. As per the Mayor, the municipal corporation is ready to transport the waste to the cement factory at its own cost. It may be noted that the city generates around 150 tonnes of solid waste every day and large chunk of it is polythene waste.
