Central funds coming, drain project gets big boost
Mumbai, September 8: Dampened hopes for the city’s crumbling infrastructure were revived in New Delhi on Friday, when the Mumbai Sewage Disposal Project (MSDP) was formally okayed for assistance under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM). The Rs 2,376-crore project is to be implemented by BMC.
‘‘We have just received news that the formal sanction has come through,’’ Municipal Commissioner Johny Joseph told The Indian Express. ‘‘On BRIMSTOWAD, they will study the technical details now,’’ said Joseph, adding that due procedures would have to be followed.
However, Mantralaya sources confirmed that a 100 per cent grant for the 13-year-old drain upgradation project was almost certain, since the Planning Commission on Thursday agreed in principle to fund the project.
While BRIMSTOWAD had originally been proposed for assistance under the JNNURM, the state delinked it from the Mission with the hope of getting a full grant for the Rs 1,800-crore project.
