Foreign cos Mumbai’s road to recovery
Katerina Stavrou has come all the way from South Africa to ensure a level playing field for Mumbaikars.
Working with a South African road repair company, Stavrou spent an entire afternoon showing BMC officials how to smoothen out the potholes from Mumbai’s roads.
“Our method has been proven to work very well under rain and under a lot of water. In South Africa and Maurtius, this system has been in use for the last 10-15 years”,says Stavrou who is the Director of Carboncor Road Products.
Stavrou’s company is not the only one eyeing these rugged roads.
A number of foreign companies are hoping to provide what they call a permanent solution to Mumbai’s pothole menace, like Emcol – a British firm that claims to have created the perfect road repair compound.
Managing Director Emcol International Alistair Ingleby says, “Our method doesn’t require extensive machinery or large number of labour. You can go out with one or two people and repair a pothole or a series of potholes.”
And given the urgent need to repair the city roads, the BMC is not averse to any of the probable solutions.
Says Chief Engineer Roads Mohan Kadam, “We will observe the effect of these systems and accordingly we will implement the systems on our roads in the coming years.”
And if these foreign companies actually succeed in proving their claims, bumpy rides can soon become a thing of the past for Mumbaikars.
