The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) informed the Bombay High Court on Wednesday that it will complete Phase I and Phase II of the Mumbai Sewage Disposal Project by the year 2010.
This project, which is being funded by the government of India aims to treat 80 per cent of sewage before letting it into the sea. By 2020, the project aims to treat 100 percent of sewage. |
Counsel for BMC K K Singhvi made the submission before a division bench of Justices R M Lodha and S A Bobde, based on a group of public interest litigations including one by Dr Sandeep Rane.
Though Phase I should have been completed by 2005, it started only in 2006 when Phase II was suppossed to start. The BMC has assured the high court that it will finish both phases by 2010.
Now the bench has directed the BMC to file a status report as on February 28, 2007 by March 10. The hearing has been adjourned till March 14.
Meanwhile, the court also directed state government to submit a report by November 22 about the status of compensation for deluge victims of last year as part of project SMITA. If they fail to submit it, the court directed the secretary of relief and rehabilitation to be present in court on November 22.
The state was suppose to file a report by March this year about the status of people eligible for compensation.
