Asked to repair roads urgently, civic body ensures its guardian minister gets a smooth ride
On Wednesday, Jayant Patil took three of his deputies for a joy ride around South Mumbai痴 roads a not-so subtle hint asking them to get something done about the pothole-strewn stretches. A few hours later, the roadrollers were already out in force reacting with speed rarely associated with the city痴 decision-makers.
So seriously was the minister痴 missive taken that by Thursday morning, the beuraucrats had ensured that the guardian minister, at least, had a smooth ride from his residence to Mantralaya.
Patil had told his three additional municipal commissioners Ashish Kumar Singh, Manisha Mhaiskar and Aseem Gupta to do something about the bumpy ride people had to face when driving around in the city.
The AMCs immediately ordered the ward officers of the A, C and D wards to take up the maintenance work immediately, with the staff working through the night.
At Marine Drive, Vivek Jadhav, supervisor from the maintenance department of the A ward arrived at 12.30 am, well after his working hours, to supervise the contractor who had employed 10 labourers.
The work of filling of potholes started at around 12.45 am from Madam Cama Road junction at Netaji Subhash Road on both the sides of the road. In all, 55 potholes were filled on Marine Drive and the task was completed by 9.30 am.
Work in C ward was taken up at around the same time and Five major patches were filled up during the night. In D ward, potholes on Bhulabhai Desai Road, M L Dahanukar Marg, Patthe Bapurao Road, the Tardeo stretch, Babasaheb Jaykar Marg, Babulnath Road at Prempuiri Junction and the Walkeshwar stretch were fixed.
Now, if only Jayant Patil would take his staff for a drive around the suburbs.
