Two deaths from suspected lepto in 24 hours
The ill-effects of water-logging and heavy rains across the city are showing up, with private hospitals reporting 12 suspected dengue and leptospirosis cases since July 5.
Meanwhile, the flow of patients at civic hospitals is increasing, with 345 admissions and two deaths reported within 24 hours—from 8 am on Saturday to 8 am on Sunday—one at Rajawadi Hospital, Ghatkopar, and another at B Y L Nair Hospital, Bombay Central. The admissions reported comprise 208 cases of fever, 32 of diarrhoea, gastroenteritis and vomiting, 19 of hepatitis, 18 suspected leptospirosis, 10 suspected dengue and 58 of malaria.
‘‘Medical teams from municipal medical colleges and the Public Health Department have been specially constituted with doctors and paramedics, along with the required diagnostic equipment and adequate stock of medicines,’’ a statement issued by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to the press on Sunday stated.
The teams and medicines have reached more than 5,000 patients of Kurla, Chembur, Andheri, Kandivli, Borivali, Dharavi, Bandra, Santacruz, Premnagar and Harinagar (Jogeshwari), Bhim Nagar-Govandi, Madanpura, Saatrasta and Sitaram Mills Compound. Pest control officers were sent to priority areas of Sindhi Camp in Kurla, Ghatla Village, Jijamata Nagar, Bharat Nagar in Bandra (East) and Ramabai Colony in Ghatkopar (East), the statement claimed.
The BMC has also requested Mumbaiites with fever to immediately avail of clinical services from nearby civic hospitals.
