Mumbai: The next Republic Day may have a special significance for the city
as every resident will get to know the Human Development Index (HDI) in the
locality he lives in. The BMC has promised to release the report on January
26, 2008.
The civic body has already had two workshops with concerned non-governmental
organisations. Two more would be held over the next two months. The All
India Institute of Local Self Government has been appointed as the nodal
agency for the exercise. In addition, the BMC will be using the data
available with it along with those from the Directorate of Economics &
Statistics, census, state planning department and the Central Labour
Institute. In a state-wide survey done in 2002, Mumbai was ranked the
highest in HDI. The proposal to survey the HDI in Mumbai was mooted by State
Planning Commission chairperson Ratnakar Mahajan.
