The Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) in alliance with Sify’s ePort cyber café chain in Mumbai will soon provide online public utility services for the citizens of Mumbai.
These services will include the payment of water tax and property tax, renewing shop and establishment licences, applying for birth and death certificates, applying for health licences, and also registering complaints and tracking the status of complaints.
Mumbai’s citizens can now visit any of the 250 ePort cafés in the city to access these facilities online. The city’s ePorts will function as civic service centres for the MCGM.
“People often have to wait in long queues for various obligations, but now with these e-ports they can pay their bills and taxes 24/7 without wastage of time,” explains V Radha, joint commissioner (Estates). The procedure for availing these services is very simple. A few steps need to be followed (see box).
“Access to the MCGM’s online services is available round the clock, seven days of the week. Citizens, now, do not have to travel to the corporation office, or wait in long queues anymore. These services can be accessed widely and the cyber café industry will be perceived as an enabler of convenient online access to multiple services thus making the internet available for all.
All businesses and industries will benefit from the increased productivity, as the corporation’s staff will no longer be spending unnecessary time for the completion of such chores,” she adds.
The centres offering this facility have already started and if the corporation meets with success, then more centres will be opened across the city .
