BMC to survey greenhouse gas emission
Mumbai: To tackle the issue of global warming, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation will soon begin a baseline survey in 11 sectors that produce greenhouse gas. The effort of the civic administration is to tackle efficiently the global warming issues in the city and earn carbon credits in the bargain.
International firm Louis Berger will be carrying out the survey at a cost of Rs 4.55 crore. Accordingly, a proposal has been tabled with the civic Standing Committee, which will discuss it for approval on Friday.
According to the proposal, the survey will be carried out in 11 sectors — transportation, construction, industries, service industries, agriculture, energy, hospitals, commercial complexes, household and municipal — in the next six months.
The firm will identify activities in each of these sectors and collect activity data, determine direct and indirect emission, collect emission factors and develop calculation tools.
Random samples will be drawn from each category and the teams will inspect the emission of greenhouse gases from electronic units installed inside the structures of these sectors factories, houses, hospitals and under construction buildings. The firm will also define emission reduction targets and identify emission reduction opportunities.
It will also be responsible for undertaking GHG inventory to formulate strategies for reduction of the gas in the city. Greenhouse gases warm the atmosphere by not allowing heat radiation to escape from the earth’s surface.
In effect it acts like a greenhouse, and traps the heat energy thus increasing the temeperature of the atmospehere.
Documentary on waste management
The BMC will be producing a 30-minute documentary to spread awareness on keeping the city clean.
The civic administration hopes to provide information on the solid waste management and garbage collection, disposal of waste carried by the BMC and its expectations from the citizens in keeping the city clean. Asmita Films will be making the documentary at the cost of Rs 50 lakh and it will be shown in theatres, schools, colleges and other places.
