Now, your corporator is just a click away…..Bhavika Jain
You don’t have to chase your elected representative to voice your grievances anymore. They will now be accessible at the click of a button. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has given email addresses to all 277 corporators. Apart from providing quick access, the idea of providing them with the email was to reduce the use of paper in the corporation.
A senior official from the IT department said, “The BMC plans to send the agendas of meetings through emails. This will save a lot of paper.”
A year ago, all corporators were given laptops as Diwali gift and were trained to use them. However, few have actually made use of the technology. According to officials, the creation of email IDs will force them to put the laptops to use. Also, once all addresses are dispatched, the IT department will schedule special training for them. The email addresses are being sent to all corporators through the municipal secretary department. Officials from the IT department say that through emails, corporators can connect to their voters.
Rahul Shewale, chairman of standing committee, said, “We have been asking for email IDs for a long time. This will help us connect with more and more people every day.â€
Understandably, citizens are also happy, as the move will enable them to connect with their representatives quickly. Veena Rajput, a Chembur resident, said: “This move will definitely help improve the efficiency of the civic body. Now, we can always get in touch with them through mail.”
The civic body has also created 3,000 email IDs based on the designation of the officers.
“We have posted email IDs of the commissioner, additional municipal commissioners on our website. The rest will be soon created and posted in a month’s time,” said Yogesh Mahangade, deputy director, IT.
