BMC Undertakes Cleanliness Drive
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), in a spirited cleanliness drive, is charging a fine to people spitting or littering on the roads of Mumbai.
However, not everyone is happy but the BMC is firm on wielding the broom for a cleaner Mumbai.
Offenders are asked to clean up and pay a fine. The punishment sometimes includes sweeping a locality for a week, but getting people to clean up their acts is easier said than done.
“I am a doctor. Should I carry a cup in my pocket? Where is the dustbin,” said a citizen.
Developing civic sense
The BMC’s latest initiative is not only about keeping Mumbai clean but also aimed at helping citizens develop a civic sense. The question really is, will this new attempt be any different from previous ones?
But some argue that Mumbai does not have enough toilets so it’s difficult to hold on.
“It’s not written that you cannot urinate here. Everyone comes here. I did too. I desperately needed to go. But where can I go?” said Suresh Wagle.
But the BMC, whose drive which is spreading across the city, says people do not use facilities even when they exist.
New bylaws by the BMC came into effect from the end of last year. There is a fine of Rs 200 for littering and spitting and a fine of Rs 500 for littering by pets.
The BMC drive has been successful in some areas but stronger laws and better facilities will be needed for a cleaner city.
