Following the incidents of fire in Kolkata and Bangalore buildings, both within a month, the BMC authorities decided to up the ante on adherence to fire safety regulations. The buildings which were issued notices included plush malls, multiplexes, hospitals and supermarkets.
The BMC has issued notices to the buildings flouting fire safety norms asking them to rectify the violations. Failing to comply with its order, the corporation has warned to cut off their water and electricity supplies.
So far, 55 buildings have been inspected. More buildings were likely to be inspected in the coming months and hence the number of buildings under the scanner is likely to increase.
Those buildings which have been served notices included Big Bazaar in Lower Parel, Wockhardt Fortis Hospital in Mulund, Heera Panna Shopping Centre, Mangaldas Market, Nirmal Lifestyle Mall and Lilavati Hospital in Bandra.
