NAGPUR: Anti-corruption wing of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Nagpur branch, nabbed a law officer of South East Central Railway while accepting a bribe of Rs 25,000 from a timber merchant. RS Gajbhiye was taken into custody by the CBI sleuths on Tuesday evening.
Gajbhiye had come to meet Prabhudas Patel at upmarket Eastern Sports Club at Wardhaman Nagar where the CBI cops under inspector KK Singh and sub-inspectors Joy Damle and Tarun Sinha were waiting for him.
Sources informed that Gajbhiye had offered Patel help against a payment of Rs 1 lakh in reducing the former’s liability in a dispute with SECR. A miffed Patel had initially approached state Anti-Corruption Bureau at Civil Lines but was directed to CBI as Gajbhiye was attached to railways, a central government undertaking.
Accordingly, Patel had Gajbhiye at the posh venue offering the first installment of Rs 25,000 which was part of the trap that CBI helped him lay. Gajbhiye was caught unawares when CBI squad caught him red-handed.
Patel’s was left hassled after he had received a notice of eviction from the railways for a default of Rs 19 lakh due on him for a land in his possession since 1940. Gajbhiye allegedly tried to lure Patel with an offer to reduce the arrears to Rs 13 lakh. Sources claimed Gajbhiye had been attached to railways since last two decades. Patel had contested zilla parishad election in the past.
