Proposed Thane flyover likely to clash with monorail route
The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporations (MSRDC) proposed flyover at Kapurbavdi junction in Thane is likely to clash with the second corridor of monorail on the Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan route.
As per the sources, the second monorail link proposed by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) would start from Thane East, cross over the rail tracks and then run parallel to Eastern Express highway till Majiwada junction. It would then take a turn and cross the Kapurbavdi junction and go to Bhiwandi.
The MMRDA officials pointed out that the corridor alignment has not been finalised, but in any case the Monorail has to pass through the Kapurbavdi junction. S M Sabnis, chief engineer of MSRDC, said, We have spoken to the MMRDA and the issue has been sorted out. We dont have to make major changes in the (flyover) structure as there is plenty of space available.
However, Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has a different take on this. They are building this flyover as little space is available at the junction now. Plus, both the monorail and flyover are elevated structure, which have to cross each other on that small junction.
The Kapurbavdi junction connects Thane city to Bhiwandi and the rest of the city to the Ghodbunder Road.
The MSRDC had decided to construct a flyover at the junction due to the traffic congestion on the route, especially on the Ghodbunder Road that has high density of heavy vehicles and is the location for almost 90 per cent of the major housing projects that are coming up of the city.
The MMRDA later decided to connect these satellite cities with a monorail.
Meanwhile, the traffic police are concerned about the accidents that could occur during construction. If they are undertaking these two projects, it has to be executed at the same time or else this would lead to chaos, said a traffic cop of the Thane police. Cops had witnessed a rise in the accidents cases when the Ghodbunder Road was being concretised few years ago.
