City to get 24×7 bin attendants……Rajendra Aklekar
The sight of garbage scattered around bins may become a thing of the past if the municipal corporation succeeds in its initiative of posting a 24×7 garbage bin attendant. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is looking at a comprehensive waste management policy to clear garbage and maintain the area around dumps.
It is common to find garbage strewn around the bins in Mumbai and it becomes difficult for those who have houses or shops around the place. There should be a system in place to manage this, Congress corporator from Goregaon Sameer Desai said.
The proposal of having a bin attendant posted for 24 hours in shifts, whose job will entail cleaning up the area, should be taken up immediately, he added.
The BMC will work out a solution and we can see if we can get our existing contractors to implement the idea of bin attendants. But when we look at garbage collection, we should look at a comprehensive garbage collection policy, which the BMC is more keen on, additional commissioner Aseem Gupta said.
The issue was also discussed at the civic standing committee meeting on Friday.
Mumbai generates more than 6,000 tonne of garbage every day and disposing garbage from all the bins has always been a challenge for the civic body.
With the recent rise in malaria cases, the BMC has been categorically told by the central malaria monitoring team to focus on slum areas.
The BMC has been directed to take up a programme to clean up garbage, the drainage systems and septic tanks of public toilets.
According to a senior official, many slum pockets in the city do not have a proper solid waste disposal mechanism.
In such cases, people throw garbage near their houses. Civic officials said a garbage management policy will look at all such instances and work out solutions.
