Over 1,500 to take part in varsity councils Cross-Dont Talk campaign
Over 1,500 college students will take time off their college lectures on Friday to create awareness among pedestrians on the consequences of crossing the road while talking over cellphones. The students council of Mumbai University (MU) has organised an awareness campaign ‘Cross – Don’t Talk’ starting from March 16.
These student volunteers would be posted in small groups near congested roads, zebra-crossings, and railways stations across Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai from 9 am-5 pm on Friday. The student volunteers armed with placards and posters would interact with pedestrians on the risk of talking over mobile phone and listening music while crossing the road.
This campaign aims at creating awareness amongst every pedestrian, especially students. We wanted to raise this issue through our students’ council. I hope we are able to convince and help a large number of people through our campaign and save their lives, said Mrudul Nile, Director of Students Welfare at MU. On the day of the students’council election we got a news about death of a student of Ruparel College in an accident. Later, we got to know that the student was listening to music while crossing the road. That is when we decided to take up this cause, said Dhanashri Patil, general secretary, MU’s students’ council.
Patil added, More than 1,500 students from colleges affiliated to MU will participate in the event as volunteers. The event is just for a day, but we plan continue this awareness campaign through the year. We would distribute pamphlets and even conduct workshops on the same in various colleges.
