CISED 3rd Short-Term Course on Environment and Rural Development (September 11-21, 2007)
The two-week course on Environment and Rural Development aims to make academic debates and discussions in the field of environment and rural development accessible to practitioners working in the field.
Starting with an overview of theories of development and of the emergence of the concept of environment, the course discusses different normative concerns such as livelihood enhancement, equity, and sustainability; different theoretical approaches such as political ecology, environmental economics, institutional economics, and science and technology studies; and basic natural science concepts, particularly in the fields of hydrology and forestry. It is hoped that the combination of social science and natural science perspectives would enhance conceptual clarity and enable practitioners from all backgrounds to re-examine issues on the ground more critically.
