Worli vendors say no to plastic bags

Mumbai: Customers at the municipal market in Worli will have to go with their own carry bags as nearly 400 vendors have pledged not to provide polythene bags. The move comes after a counselling session by the BMC.
Suresh Dalvi, who works with the survey department, said, The concept works because of wholehearted participation of the stakeholders.
On an average, a vendor spends nearly Rs 2,000 to buy carry bags per month. If a vendor stops buying plastic bags, he can save between Rs 25,000 and Rs 30,000 a year. Once this logic gets ingrained, voluntary ban is a matter of time, Dalvi explained.
The move follows the success of a similar plan by vendors in Vile Parle. Subodh Jaiswal of the local hawkers body said, We have put up posters to persuade people to cooperate with us.
