Tips for, objections to highway plan invited
The authority, headed by the Chief Minister, recently gave the green signal for this. This has cleared decks for suggestions and objections as the project would involve rehabilitation of the displaced people, said Dilip Kawathkar, joint project director of the MMRDA.
This six-lane road, estimated to cost around Rs 125 crore with a length of 1.25 km, would be constructed from the MTNL junction at the BKC and would be connected to the Eastern Express highway near the Guru Teg Bahadur Nagar near Sion. Under the project, a bridge over the Mithi river also needs to be constructed and a part of the elevated road would also cross railway tracks near Sion. This would not only require clearance from the railways but also from the union environment ministry.
The MMRDA wanted to build this elevated road for better connectivity of the eastern suburbs to the business district of the BKC. Meanwhile, sources in the MMRDA said the proposed flyover at Bharatmata is likely to be delayed by three months due to the shifting of underground utilities (wire networks of agencies like MTNL, citys pipelines). The flyover was expected to get completed by December 2009. This 462-meters long flyover is to be built at a cost of Rs 15 crore.
The MMRDA has also decided to join the King circle flyover to the Tipule Chowk junction flyover wherein a 1.5 km flyover would now be built. The length of the Tilpule junction flyover is some 580 meters while the King Circle flyover measures around 1.97 km. Since the two flyovers were towards each other it was decided to join them, said an MMRDA official.
