We have written to the State Government to hand over the land so that we can start developing it, said a senior MMRDA official. Apart from using it for commercial purposes, we will also be using some portion of it for our rental housing project, the official said.
The 621-hectare land, off the Eastern Express highway, is owned by the State Government. A marshy area, this lush green patch of land extends from Kanjur to Bhandup.
Sources in the MMRDA said the plot is located strategically as it is off the Eastern Express highway on one side and close to the Jogeshwari-Vikhroli link road that connects eastern suburbs with the western. It is well connected with the railway station as well.
Like the BKC, the MMRDA has developed Oshiwara district centre in the western suburb between Jogeshwari and Goregoan. The 102-hectare land at Oshiwara has various kinds of commercial units and residential complexes.
The MMRDA had, last month, written to the state government, asking for land in various pockets of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The government has already handed over the land at Borivali (Khatau mills) and Thane, where the MMRDA is planning to start its rental housing scheme. The Kanjur land will help MMRDA to generate revenue for its future projects as the land available with the agency at present at BKC and Wadala is getting exhausted.
