Heritage committee defers decision on Crawford Market
Mumbai, October 04 The Mumbai Heritage Conservation Committee (MHCC) which met on Thursday to discuss the crucial proposal of Crawford Market re-development, deferred any decision on the issue due to lack of information. The committee has asked for more information from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation to enable it to take a decision by next month.
The Crawford Market re-development needs clearance from the heritage committee, environment and security agencies before the developer can begin the construction work. The civic administration which was in doubt whether 4 FSI can be allowed at the Grade I heritage structure, wanted the MHCCs opinion and has presently withheld the letter of intent to be given to the developer.
When contacted, MHCC member Sharda Dwivedi said that the members did not discuss the issue at all. We did not have adequate information to discuss the proposal. So we asked the civic administration to provide us some more documents and reference material, before we can discuss the issue, she said. The MHCC has asked for the earlier plans of BMC, the Manu Kumar Shrivastava committee report on Crawford Market and the proposal of allowing 4 FSI at the Crawford Market structure among other documents.
Meanwhile, MP Milind Deora also wrote to the MHCC to take a serious view of the current developments and evaluate the proposal in right earnest by honouring public sentiments against such hasty and haphazard development.
