The recession it seems has made most people realise the importance of a good, stable government job. In fact, some are even ready to pay Rs 1 lakh as bribe for a job with a mere Rs 12,000 monthly salary.
Take the case of Thane residents Pankaj Jadhav and Ganesh Pawar, both in their early 20s. The two boys fell for a conmans ploy, claiming that he could get them jobs at the Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (MMRDA).
The boys even paid Rs 1 lakh each after receiving appointment letters and identity cards. However, they were in for a rude shock on their first day at work in February.
We were thrown out. Officials there told us that nobody by our names had been hired on MMRDA payrolls. Dejected, we tried calling the bureaucrat who had helped us, but found that he wasnt traceable, said Jadhav. Fortunately, the boys had taken a picture of the accused, which will now help police trace him.
A Mantralaya official
The boys claim that this man pretended to be a Mantralaya official. We were asked to contact him by a friend. We even met him at Mantralaya which made us believe that he was who he claimed to be, said Pawar.
The boys have retained a card given to them by the accused, which has the name Nageshrao Pawar on it, saying he worked at the Mantralaya irrigation department.
The card even has Mantralayas board line number. However, enquiries by Mumbai Mirror revealed that no such person works for the department.
I made it clear that money would be given only after we were certain that the boys had gotten the job, said Pawars mother Lata, adding that she had taken precautions knowing that there are several conmen who offer government jobs.
The boys have now filed complaints with the Economic Offences Wing, Thane. They have also sought help from Madat Samajik Sanstha, an NGO that specialises in helping victims of white collar crimes.
Shashi Agarwal, founder of MSS, said, If original government stationery can be used to prepare bogus appointment letters and ID cards, it is a serious lapse.
Sameer Unhale, deputy metropolitan commissioner at MMRDA, said, The matter has just come to our notice and we have already initiated a detailed inquiry. Strict action will be taken against the conmen.
