MMRDA plans green initiatives for MMR
The report will study the current environment status in the MMR and accordingly the strategy for sustainable environment will be formulated.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) in collaboration with The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) has decided to initiate green initiatives for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). As a first step, MMRDA has proposed to conduct an environment status report for the MMR region. The report will study the current environment status in the MMR and accordingly the strategy for sustainable environment will be formulated.
Ratnakar Gaikwad, Metropolitan Commissioner, MMRDA while discussing about the green initiatives for MMR said, Our aim is to make MMR as a green and energy efficient region. The green initiatives taken by MMRDA will benefit the MMR in the long run by reducing the pollution and environmental degradation hence, provide a healthy environment for the living beings.
TERI in association with MMRDA will work towards lowering the carbon footprints for transport system in Mumbai by conducting CO2 emission study of the urban transport system in MMR and will also work with MMRDA for generating carbon credits from Metro and Monorail projects.
Although new technologies are constantly being developed to complement current practices, the comamon objective is that to reduce the overall impact of the polluted environment on human health by efficiently using sustainable development methods. Dr Rajendra Pachauri, Director General, TERI.

We do realize the significance and the large scale benefits of being eco conscious and are putting in our best efforts towards building/ensuring a greener environment for the MMR said Mr S V R Srinivas, Additional Metropolitan Commissioner, MMRDA.
Taking the lead, MMRDA itself has decided to come up with a Green building initiative by conducting an energy efficient programme for its existing building. TERI will carry out the energy efficient building retrofitting program (EEBRP), in which a walk through analysis for the energy saving potential of the building will be conducted, and the majors will be taken to rectify the loss of energy which will be retrofitted.
MMRDA has planned to introduce new cooling technologies which will conserve energy. Appropriate and useful optimization of the building heat load, also new and improved energy efficient lights will be brought in. Renewable energy will be used as an alternative to the current usage by bringing in energy sources like solar energy, rain water harvesting etc.
