Vasai Fort reminds of a glorious past

About 55 kms from the Island City lies the remains of a once majestic fort overlooking a creek and the nearby beach. The main gate of the Fort of St. Sebastian of Vasai, popularly known as Vasai Fort, leads to a inner courtyard from where one can climb the ramparts to take good look around. A few Bollywood films, including Josh and Khamoshi, have been shot near the fort and the surrounding areas.

Built in the 16th century by Bahadur Shah, the Sultan of Gujarat, the Vasai fort remained in the hands of the Portuguese till the Marathas seiged it in 1739. A stronghold of power for over two centuries, the fort fell into disrepair soon after. Today the ramparts are still intact with several watch towers and staircases leading to the upper levels. And the crumbling structures within the fort, complete with facades and high arches, have enough walls to indicate the glory of a bygone era.

There are ruins of three chapels inside the fort with facades resembling 17th century Portuguese churches. And one of them has an almost well preserved barrel-vaulted ceiling, The area surrounding the fort is overgrown with bushes and other vegetation but is a great place to spend the day looking at local flora and fauna.

The fort is accessible through rail and road. Take a Virar-bound train on the Western Railways and get off at Vasai Road railway station. From there, autorickshaws or state transport buses will take you to the fort.
