The best way to preserve information stored as memories is to record oral history. Talking from personal experience, this is quite painstaking. Through internet, I came across a Professor of Political Science, born in Pakistan in 1947 and living/ working in Sweden, who was writing a book on Partition. This was around 5 years ago. He had chosen some key incidents and tried tracing them through recording of oral history on either side of border. I accompanied him on his reasearch tour in Indian Punjab. It called for extensive travelling, linking various information pieces, interviewing skills and so on. People have shifted, names of places changed, structures razed/ altered.
It would also be appreciated that to have worthwhile, verifiable memories one had to be at least 15-30 years old at the time of partition. Very few are left. Many we interviewed have passed away since. But we did collect a wealth of information and supporting documents. The gentleman has now come out with the book which is with the Publishers currently. The effort was well worth it because we learnt about numerous incidents which are stranger than fiction and altered our
