My name is Ramesh Kumar Suri. I was born in the month of May 1947 in a very small town (or big village) in a place, which now is in Pakistan.
We migrated to India in 1947 Leaving everything in Pakistan. I spent my childhood (1952 to 1966) in Amritsar.
With this brief description I write down few of my childhood memories:
In my primary school, we used to wish our teachers by saying ?Jai Hind ji? . Ji was for respect to teacher.
There was no difference between Hindu and Sikh.
In my city (and may be in other cities too) Muslims were treated as Untouchables during those days. In Amritsar, in almost every road you could get iced water free in summer. You had to drink it through a cup made out by your Palm. For Muslims, between Palm and water dispenser a piece of Bamboo was introduced.
Eighth standard was called as Vernacular Final. 10th std. was high school.
I Passed out of Municipal School wherein fees for 1st standard was ONE Paisa (1/64th of a Rupee). There was no play school/ Pre-nursery/Nursery/Jr. Kg/Sr. Kg during those days.
Radio set was of size of TV monitor. An outdoor Antenna was required for proper reception. Gramophone records were played on spring loaded player.
There was no self in cars /buses/trucks. These were hand cranked.
