Now, an e-mail helpline for women in distress
Mumbai: Mumbai’s new sheriff Indu Shahani will launch an e-mail helpline for women in distress, in association with Rediff.com, on Thursday afternoon. A month back she had launched the telephone helpline 1298.
An e-mail sent to call-1298@rediffmail.com or an sms to 57333 will allow the sender to receive every possible detail of over 60 organisations working for women in distress. Women can also log onto www.act.rediff.com in order to access details of counselling centres, shelter homes and other initiatives for women.
Over the last one month, the telephonic helpline has received an average of 20-25 calls a day. We have received a total of 660 phone calls, Shahani said. The women who called helplines faced various forms of abuse like alcoholic husbands, others faced sexual abuse and many were tortured by their husbands or in-laws.
Shahani thought of creating the e-helpline after she was flooded with e-mails from distraught women and their parents. She then realised that not many women were comfortable making calls, so she decided to start the e-helpline for such women. TNN
