The Brihanmumbai Municipal corporation (BMC) has started to act on the increasing numbers of unauthorised hawkers in city. Staffers and officers of 24 wards, divided into six groups, further divided into groups of four, will move in various areas to crack down on illegal hawkers. The BMC plans to remove all unauthorised hawkers by the end of March 2008, in what they term is their effective, repeated action. This was decided in a meeting with senior civic officers on February 24. The first action was taken in C ward on Monday. Deputy Municipal Commissioner (special), Milind Sambharkar said the action being taken by BMC before Monday was not enough, for the hawkers returned to the same spots, creating a nuisance. He said, The groups involved in the effective, repeated action will work two shifts, one in the morning and one in the evening. They will continue to work even on weekends. This will help, for a large numbers of people are out shopping on holidays, and unauthorised hawkers follow them. As we will take action around the clock, the result will be better and effective. The civic body had removed nearly 750 illegal hawkers across the city in the action on Monday. C ward officer Sharad Dalvi said the BMC worked mainly in the Bhuleshwar lane, Shekh Menon street, Shamal Das Gandhi Marg and Mangal Das Marg. He says, We have formed groups for the B, C, D and E wards. Nearly 45 civic staffers and 12 policemen will work at a time in a ward on removing the illegal hawkers. The police are supporting us in large numbers. The action has been quite effective and we are further expecting good results, said Sambharkar. However, A ward officer Vijay Balamwar said BMC is still preparing the plan, though he ensured that action will be taken against illegal hawkers at Nariman Point and Jamanalal Bajaj road. |
