Panel Discussion on
the proposed bill on legalising live in relationships!
will it affect your marital rights?
The issue of live-in relationships is truly like a red rag to all married women! In Indian society, such relationships are considered to be acts of social defiance and Indian laws do not approve of such relationships and the progeny born of such unions. The recent proposal of the Government of Maharashtra, based on Justice S. Malimath Committees recommendations to amend Section 125(1)(b) of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973 has brought this contentious issue once more into the limelight.
Before taking any decision on this issue, we need debates which take into account all the dimensions of such a law if passed i.e. the social, legal, economic and psychological aspects of such a law. The Ladies Wing of the Indian Merchants Chamber (IMC), the Business and Professional Womens Association, Bombay (BPWA) and the Women In Management Committee of the Bombay Management Association have joined hands to organize this panel discussion on the pros and cons of a proposed bill to legalise live in relationships in Maharashtra. The discussion will throw light on every aspect of the law and answer all questions that may cause insecurity to married women. The panel comprises expert lawyers and activists.
Panelists: Adv. Veena Gowda, Adv. Pradeep Havnur, Ms. Hasina Khan, activist from Awaz-e-Niswan and Dr. Eshita Mandal, Psychologist.
Date: 11th December, 2008
Time: 3 to 5.15 pm.
