If voters are turned off by the procedures involved in getting an identity card, the authorities will make it easier for them. They need no longer go out of their way to get an application form. The district election office will distribute forms in every household; voters need only fill them up and submit these with their documents at the nearest polling booth.
The election office will also carry out fresh registration of voters. Only 56 per cent of the total 57 lakh voters in the district have photo identity cards, with poor response from urban voters as compared to those from the rural area, a district election official said.
The Election Commission will appoint officers at booth level for preparing rolls. The officers would visit cooperative institutions, housing societies and ward offices to read the electoral rolls. The special drive will begin on November 16 and run till November 23.
Provisional rolls will be published soon; objections and suggestions will be accepted till November 24. The final rolls will be out on January 10.
