196 corruption cases pending
Nine years after AK Jain, an IPS officer, was arrested by the anti-corruption bureau (ACB), he is still to be suspended. Reason: the ACB court is yet to hear his case.
In reply to a Right to Information (RTI) query, the ACB said that a total of 196 similar cases are pending in the special ACB courts since the year 2000.
While insufficient number of courts is one of the major hitches, advocates trying to delay matters by purposely taking adjournments is said to be another. The ACB has been allotted merely three special courts in the sessions court in south Mumbai. While these three courts have majority of ACB cases, they also get other important cases from CBI, Anti-Narcotics Cell (ANC) and Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB).
“We have written to the state government requesting them to increase the number of courts for ACB matters,” said ACB additional superintendent of police, Sanjay Parande adding that the request in under consideration.
“Speedy trial is beneficial for the case as the longer the case takes, the complainant loses interest. It is only in the Mumbai range where ACB has specially allotted courts. The rest of the ranges in the state have to go to the general courts,” he added.
