SOCIAL ACTIVIST Anna Hazare took the state government to task on Monday for red-tapism, growing corruption and improper implementation of the Right to Infor mation Act.
Following Hazare's outburst, Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh promised him to take immediate corrective action.
At a special meet- ing with Deshmukh and other senior ministers, Hazare pointed out several instances of delayed administrative action by government staff.
"The files don't move fast although the law prohibits officers from withholding files for more than seven days," said Hazare.
Deshmukh has asked Chief Secretary Johny Joseph to monitor such delays. Joseph informed at the meeting that any delay in clearing of files by officers would adversely affect their annual appraisal.
On Hazare's demand, the state has decided to install digital systems to register employees' attendance.
"The employees don't at tend offices or go to work late," said Hazare. "Hence we need to check this." Pointing out that many offices did not display a list of information and appellate officers, Hazare has asked Deshmukh to provide adequate staff to the information commissioners' offices.
According to a government press release, the activist discussed rampant corruption in kerosene sales in Solapur district and distribution of bogus ration cards across the state.
Deshmukh met Hazare's demand for inquiry into cor ruption cases in water re source works in Nashik dis trict and some cooperative so cieties, the release added.
