Poor service may land BEST in consumer court........Rajendra Aklekar Mumbai
PROVING THAT citizens can take the government or civic undertakings to talks over poor service, regular passengers of the Kinglong buses run by the BEST are planning to approach the consumer court.
The citizens have been demanding better quality in the air-conditioned buses for some time, but the BEST management has allegedly refused to meet the aggrieved passengers. The passengers are now thinking of moving the court to get their rights. “We have paid the money for passes in advance. We have the right to air our complaints. The BEST management has been refusing to meet us. They have been refusing to meet us on the pretext of questions like whether we were a registered body etc. Meanwhile, our problems continue,” said K.R. Parmeshwar, president, the Kinglong Bus Passenger Association — parent body of over 10 organisations of passengers travelling by Kinglong buses. “Many times, they even send normal buses as replacements to air-conditioned Kinglong ones,” he said. “We will give the management one last chance to try and meet them, and then move the court,” he added. However Pravin Chheda, BEST chairman, said nobody had approached him. “No one has approached me so far. They are only approaching the media and not us.” “They can come to me and I will try and help them,” he added. However Parameswaran said: “We tried meeting everybody and even sent our representative, but he was turned away saying we were not a registered body . We are all working people and will have to take a holiday to follow this. And we have paid hundreds of rupees to travel by these buses.” Kinglong buses were introduced by the BEST in December 2007, and have a good following. However, the BEST is claiming to have removed 400 cars off the road for poor response. Most passengers are white-collar officegoers. Parmeshwar said the BEST officials, instead of solving their problems, were just blaming the passengers instead. “We are compiling all our complaints and preparing the documents. There is no option left now, as we have to fight for a better public transport in this city .” URL:http://epaper.hindustantimes.com/artMailDisp.aspx?article=21_08_2008_005_007&typ=0&Archtype=&pub=264 |
